Compensation ordered for underweight wafer pack-Chennai-Cities-The Times of India:
"CHENNAI: Sale of an underweight packet of potato chips has landed a food and beverage company, in trouble.
A district consumer forum in Ooty has ordered the company, its distributor and retailers to jointly pay a compensation of Rs 5,000 to a lawyer who bought a 15-gram chips pack but found it had only 7.7 grams of chips. The forum also awarded Rs 1,000 towards case expenditure.

The advocate, M Balraj, bought the Rs 5 pack from a retail shop on September 10, 2006. As it was too light, he weighed the pack. The shopkeeper refused to replace the packet."

Workers Battle Over The Office Thermostat -- Courant.com

Workers Battle Over The Office Thermostat -- Courant.com: "Forget international summits on environmental policy. An ugly war against climate change is probably being waged in your workplace.

The scene is the same in many an office: Sally in Accounting shivers at her desk bundled in a wool sweater, while Tim in Human Resources sweats through the 10 a.m. meeting. The thermostat is set at 70 degrees, but both workers are getting hot under their white collars."

UK Parliament - Early Day Motions - "PHOTOGRAPHY IN PUBLIC AREAS"

UK Parliament - Early Day Motions By Details: "PHOTOGRAPHY IN PUBLIC AREAS
11.03.2008

Mitchell, Austin

That this House is concerned to encourage the spread and enjoyment of photography as the most genuine and accessible people's art; deplores the apparent increase in the number of reported incidents in which the police, police community support officers (PCSOs) or wardens attempt to stop street photography and order the deletion of photographs or the confiscation of cards, cameras or film on various specious ground such as claims that some public buildings are strategic or sensitive, that children and adults can only be photographed with their written permission, that photographs of police and PCSOs are illegal, or that photographs may be used by terrorists; points out that photography in public places and streets is not only enjoyable but perfectly legal; regrets all such efforts to stop, discourage or inhibit amateur photographers taking pictures in public places, many of which are in any case festooned with closed circuit television cameras; and urges the Home Office and the Association of Chief Police Officers to agree on a photography code for the information of officers on the ground, setting out the public's right to photograph public places thus allowing photographers to enjoy their hobby without officious interference or unjustified suspicion."

Comment Central - Times Online - WBLG: Why motorists left a cyclist to die:
"Why motorists left a cyclist to die

The death of the cyclist Stephen Wills is a terrible story. Knocked off his bike by joyriders, he was left in the road as motorists drove round him.

One driver may even have driven over Mr Wills, breaking his legs. How could so many people have been so inhumane?"

The Office of Fair Trading: OFT issues statement of objections against 112 construction companies

The Office of Fair Trading: OFT issues statement of objections against 112 construction companies: "52/08 17 April 2008

Following one of the largest ever Competition Act investigations, the OFT has today issued a Statement of Objections (SO) against 112 firms in the construction sector in England.

The OFT formally alleges that the construction companies named in the SO have engaged in bid rigging activities, and in particular cover pricing. Cover pricing describes a situation where one or more bidders collude with a competitor during a tender process to obtain a price or prices which are intended to be too high to win the contract. The tendering authority, for example a local council or other customer, is not made aware of the contacts between bidders, leaving it with a false impression of the level of competition and this may result in it paying inflated prices."

Is it such a bad thing? - If they are getting paid more then there is no excuse for not doing health and safety correctly is there, on the other hand if you put a few of these companies names into the HSE's prosecutions database http://www.hse.gov.uk/prosecutions/ you may get a different impression. How many can you find?

Stressed mental health worker wins £2k in compensation - The Sunday Mail

Stressed mental health worker wins £2k in compensation - The Sunday Mail: "Stressed Worker Wins £2k

A MENTAL health worker has won £2000 compensation after bosses risked her OWN mental well-being.

Marion Mitchell was forced to quit her job with tax payer funded charity Scottish Association For Mental Health after a row about expenses.

The 49-year-old - who helped mentally ill people with employment problems - won her unfair dismissal claim after representing herself.

Marion said: 'SAMH are a mental health charity yet they strained mine.

'Due to a ridiculous request for me to change the way I work - which they admitted was wrong - I was left with financial troubles and very stressed.'"

Health and safety laws banned hanging baskets

Health and safety laws banned hanging baskets: "The reality

Back in 2004 a town did briefly take down its hanging baskets over fears that old lamp posts would collapse. This was an overly-cautious reaction to a low risk.

However, after quick checks the hanging baskets were replaced and have been on lamp posts in the town every year since.

Despite this, the story continues to be repeated and the danger is someone will believe it is a genuine requirement and follow suit."
