‘Conker canker’ outbreak - icWales

‘Conker canker’ outbreak - icWales: May 18 2008 by James McCarthy, Wales On Sunday

"IF HEALTH and safety killjoys don’t stop kids playing conkers first - a highly contagious plant disease might.

Half of the nation’s two million horse chestnut trees have ‘conker canker’ which makes the trunk split and ooze sap.

Trees can be wiped out in just two years and there is no known cure.

The Forestry Commission’s plant health head, Roddie Burgess, said: “This is an unknown bacteria and at this stage we have no idea how it got here, why it affects certain horse chestnuts and not others, or how long it takes to kill a plant.”"

OK - PLAYING CONKERS IS BANNED

Improving performance

A small business was having safety problems – 2 serious accidents and an enforcement notice from the Environmental Health Officer (EHO) ! So the Managing Director (MD) called a local safety consultant one morning, and asked him if there was anything he could do to improve their performance.

"Well, there is one procedure I can recommend that will reduce accidents and pacify the EHO" said the safety consultant, "but it is really rather expensive. It will cost you £10,000 down, and payments of £1000 for 36 months, plus payments for extras of course.

"My goodness!" the MD exclaimed, "that sounds like I'm buying a yacht!"

"Humm," the safety consultant murmured, "too obvious, huh?"

"PREPARE FOR an invasion. Following the victory of Boris Johnson in the London mayoral election, liberal-minded Scots in London are packing their bags and preparing to scarper. Leading the rush north is Ian Jack, the celebrated Guardian journalist and former editor of the literary magazine Granta.

Jack recently wrote that he might find it impossible to remain in London after a takeover by Boris Johnson and his Oxford dining chum David Cameron. 'It means living under a double yoke of old Etonians', he lamented. Jack compared Scotland to liberal Canada, where many American refugees from Bush Republicanism have taken up residence."

Myth: park benches must be replaced because they are too low

Myth: park benches must be replaced because they are too low:

"The reality

When we heard this story it really took us by surprise. How could there be health & safety law on this? The simple answer is, there isn’t.

'It seems that the story originated from a decision by a facility manager and has no basis in health and safety law at all. There are no such bench height requirements and HSE will definitely not be sending our inspectors around measuring the benches!

Well, it looks like Britain’s park benches will survive after all!"

Workers Safety Fears At Fawley Refinery (from Daily Echo): "Workers’ safety fears at Fawley refinery
By Peter Law

"Anxious staff at the giant Fawley oil refinery have revealed their fears of a major accident at the plant in a shocking new report obtained by the Daily Echo."
"Since the reward scheme is linked to safety eg lack of incident, it appears to have provided individuals with an incentive to cover up and not report minor incidents, accidents and near-misses as otherwise they (and their team) will be blamed for an incident and lose safety bonuses," the report says.

"Esso and ExxonMobil Chemical at Fawley strongly reject any claims that the Fawley site is unsafe."

Ghettoized Britain where citizens live in isolated communities in fear of violating a 'cult of political correctness'

By Hilary White in England"

"Britain's millions of close circuit TV cameras monitor citizens everywhere, even in the smallest country villages. "Stories abound in the press of a Britain labouring under the rule of an obsessive "nanny state" that controls and regulates every minute detail of life. While council tax rises, some councils have reduced the number of garbage collections to once in a fortnight and installed microchips in wheelie bins and hired "rubbish police" to ensure that citizens are not throwing away too much or the wrong kind of trash; violators can be fined or face charges"
