Welsh councils in £8m payouts storm
By Ben Glaze, Wales On Sunday
WELSH councils and their insurers have paid out a massive £8m in compensation claims which range from slipping on apple sauce to breaking a £90 stiletto heel.
And eight councillors were among those taking legal action between 2005 and 2007 for incidents such as tripping over pavements, pot holes puncturing car tyres and vehicles damaged on council property.
The real figure is likely to much higher than £8m, as three of Wales’ 22 councils – including the second biggest, Rhondda Cynon Taf – refused to reveal details.
Newport, with a population of 137,011, came out top of the compensation table, paying out a huge £3.18m, figures released under Freedom of Information laws revealed to Wales on Sunday.
